The Hollywood Forever Cemetery has become the resting place for many famous people, including Bugsy Seagle, Jayne Mansfield, and Rudolph Valentino. To the south of the cemetery, you can see the Paramount Studios prop house. It was the first cemetery in Hollywood.
In the early nineties, the cemetery had fallen into bankruptcy and disarray, due to the careless owner. After his death, and nine million dollars, the cemetery was restored to its previous state.
One of the ghosts said to haunt the grounds is Fatty Arbuckle, a heavy man known for his surprising acrobatic skills and gleeful laughter. But, after the death of Virginia Rappe, days after partying with Arbuckle in San Francisco, all of this changed. He was accused of raping Virginia, which had closely influenced her death. He became a public enemy overnight.
In reality, Arbuckle went back to his room, where Rappe had been. She was on the floor of his bathroom. He carried her to a bed, and got water for her, thinking she was just drunk. He went back to the room, where Rappe was now writhing in pain on the floor. He put her on the bed again. Rappe's friend went into the room, where Rappe accused Arbuckle of 'doing this' to her. She was taken to the hospital, where she died of peritonitis. Arbuckle was arrested for 1st-degree murder, saying that Arbuckle's 'rape' of Rappe ruptured her bladder. In trial, Arbuckle was acquitted. Arbuckle died in his sleep at the age of forty six. Virginia Rappe was buried at the Hollywood Memorial (later Forever) Cemetery, where many claim to still see her spirit.
A man went to visit Rappe's grave in the eighties. When he got to Rappe's grave, he took a few pictures. He claimed to hear a sobbing, after recounting Rappe's life to his sister. They looked around, unable to find a source. They then realised that it was coming from below their feet. They got closer to her grave, where the sobbing became louder. Perhaps because she is lonely, or that she never got to live a full happy life.
Ditra Flame, or the Lady In Black, was once the envy of every woman in America. Her family was close with silent screen heart throb; Rudolph Valentino. Valentino's death is arguably a bigger deal than Marilyn Monroe's and James Dean's. His death gave him immortality, as a young, sexy heartthrob.
The Flame and Valentino grew up together. Flame was always ill, and when Valentino would visit her, he always brought a rose for her. He once asked her "If I died before you do, please come stay by me. I don't want to be alone either. You come and talk to me."
A few years later, like Rappe, Valentino died of peritonitis, or an inflammation of the intestines.
A hundred thousand people went to the cemetery to watch him be layed to rest. Ditra was devastated, and kept her promise. She would come dressed in black carrying a bouquet of 'blood red roses'. She would go every year, on the anniversary of his death, always in that dress, and the roses. She was dubbed the lady in black by the media. Flame died in 1984. Her tombstone says 'The Lady in Black' on it as well.
Her ghost has been seen kneeling in front of Valentino's tomb. The vases on his tomb are always filled with roses after her departure. Many people have reported seeing her. One person felt as if she were being watched as she walked around the tomb. No one else was there. She went to his grave, and noticed that his vases were empty. She touched the letters on the tomb. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a shadow. She walked toward the mausoleum's only exit and quickly turned around she saw that the tomb now had roses in them.
Here's the story behind the picture came from today:
Clifton Webb was a very talented actor, and a famous mommas boy. She passed away in 1959. He died in 1966 from a heart attack. Before he died, he said he would never leave his house on Rexford Drive in Beverly Hills.
Many people (including myself) have seen him, some claiming to see a shimmering light which many think is his apparition. It occurs in the hall that he is buried in. Some have also seen him as a normal apparition, wearing his favorite clothes. He is said to enjoy walking up and down the hall.
The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is still a popular site for movie buffs and ghost hunter's alike. If you go, you never know what you may see...
